Inside the Summit: Exploring Canada’s Trail Sector Priorities

Dig deeper into the three key streams of the 2026 Canadian Trail Summit: innovating trail management, strengthening the trail sector and healthy communities

Canada’s vast trail networks not only cover tens of thousands of kilometres; they also navigate the incredibly varied geography our country has to offer. Our trails are some of the most dynamic on earth, passing through forests, prairies, mountains, tundra, coastlines and urban landscapes.

While every region is different and certainly faces unique challenges, there are many common issues facing trails across the country. Things like climate change, economic pressures, a changing workforce and rising demand for outdoor recreation are reshaping how trails are built, maintained and experienced from coast to coast to coast.

The Canadian Trail Summit’s theme, “Trails for a Changing World” is meant to inspire bold ideas and practical solutions to help shape the future of trails, regardless of geography. To provide an added level of focus to the Summit, presentations will be broken down into three key streams:

Innovating Trail Management
Exploring new approaches to trail design, construction and signage, alongside strategies for climate resilience, this stream focuses on ensuring trails thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Strengthening the Trail Sector
From resource allocation and volunteer engagement to training, data and government support, this stream examines how trail organizations can build capacity and adapt to evolving needs.

Healthy Communities
Highlighting the role of trails in physical activity, social connection, mental well-being and reconciliation, this stream emphasizes how accessible, inclusive trail systems contribute to stronger, healthier communities.

These timely subjects will be explored through keynote presentations from trail-sector leaders, panel discussions, small-group sessions, and experiential workshops and field trips.

By gathering trail builders, advocates, and community leaders from every corner of the country, the Summit will gather a wide range of ideas and experiences. The goal of this unique national event is to identify common priorities, develop shared solutions and work together to build a more resilient nationwide trail sector.
